MGNREGA to be replaced by VB–G Ram G under rural jobs overhaul

New Delhi: The Centre said VB–G Ram G would replace MGNREGA with a strengthened rural employment framework that promises more workdays, tighter monitoring and durable asset creation while retaining workers’ legal right to jobs.

Officials said the new law aimed to upgrade the employment guarantee scheme launched in 2005, not dismantle it. According to the government, VB–G Ram G aligned rural job creation with the Viksit Bharat vision through predictable funding and technology-driven oversight.

The Centre said VB–G Ram G would offer more assured workdays and improve income stability for rural households. At the same time, it said the scheme would continue the legal entitlement to employment or unemployment allowance if work was not provided.

Moreover, officials said the new framework would focus on building durable rural assets. These include water conservation structures, improved irrigation facilities and local infrastructure that directly support farmers and agricultural productivity.

VB–G Ram G and technology-driven monitoring

Under VB–G Ram G, the government said it would deploy AI-based checks, GPS tracking and real-time monitoring to curb leakages. As a result, officials said funds would reach beneficiaries faster and with greater transparency.

In addition, the Centre said predictable fund flows would help states plan projects better. Consequently, rural works would see fewer interruptions and higher completion rates.

The government said farmers would benefit from stronger water management and infrastructure assets created under the scheme. Meanwhile, rural workers would continue to receive statutory wage support linked to verified work.

Officials maintained that VB–G Ram G represented an upgrade rather than an end to MGNREGA. They said the new law sought to modernise rural employment while preserving its core social security guarantees.
