Hyderabad: Singareni coal supply to the power sector reached 40.51 lakh tonnes in August, with nearly 90% going to Telangana power plants. The company gave first priority to the state amid rising electricity demand.
Singareni Collieries Company Limited supplied 40,51,312 tonnes of coal to power utilities across the country during August. Of this, 36,25,937 tonnes went to power utilities located in Telangana.
Therefore, nearly nine out of every 10 tonnes supplied by Singareni to the power sector reached generating stations in Telangana. The company maintained this priority as electricity consumption increased across the country.
Thermal power stations also required higher coal supplies during the period. Meanwhile, several power utilities outside Telangana sought additional coal from Singareni.
The wider demand was linked to rising electricity consumption amid El Nino conditions. However, Singareni continued to prioritise Telangana’s power requirements.
The company’s supply strategy followed directions from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Bhatti Vikramarka. They had directed Singareni to support uninterrupted electricity supply across Telangana.
Accordingly, the company maintained continuous coal supplies to power-generating stations in the state. The supplies supported the state’s energy needs during a period of higher demand.
Singareni also supplied coal to public-sector power utilities under long-term fuel supply agreements. These arrangements covered utilities in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
The company has continued such supplies for several decades. They have supported the energy requirements of power utilities across the respective states.
Singareni coal supply rises amid El Nino demand
Electricity demand increased significantly even during the monsoon because of prevailing El Nino conditions. Consequently, power utilities across the country looked to Singareni for additional coal supplies.
Several utilities sought supplies as thermal power generation requirements increased. However, the company continued to place Telangana’s needs ahead of demand from power utilities elsewhere.
In August, Telangana power utilities received 36.25 lakh tonnes from Singareni. The company supplied 40.51 lakh tonnes to power utilities across the country during the same month.
Thus, Telangana generating companies accounted for almost 90% of Singareni’s coal dispatches to power utilities. The allocation reflected the company’s decision to prioritise the state’s electricity requirements.
The priority also came as power consumption increased across the country. At the same time, thermal power stations sought more coal to meet generation needs.
Singareni’s supply arrangements covered several states through long-term agreements. Even so, the company continued to give Telangana the highest priority under the state government’s directions.
The August figures showed the scale of that allocation. Telangana received more than 36 lakh tonnes from the total 40.51 lakh tonnes supplied to the power sector.
The company’s approach was aimed at supporting steady power generation in Telangana. It also reflected the state’s focus on meeting electricity requirements during increased consumption.
