New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said agencies seized 526 kg of methamphetamine and heroin from an Iranian boat in India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Five Pakistani nationals were arrested during the joint operation involving the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Indian Coast Guard and central intelligence agencies.
Shah said the operation ran for 16 days from September 14 to 30. The agencies also seized the Iranian boat during the operation and are continuing their investigation.
The seizure took place 160 nautical miles northwest of Lakshadweep and 490 nautical miles southwest of Mumbai. Authorities are investigating the wider network linked to the seized narcotics and their intended receivers.
Shah said the operation demonstrated coordination among agencies in protecting India’s maritime borders. He also said the government remained committed to protecting young people from drug abuse.
The joint action brought together the Gujarat ATS, Indian Coast Guard and central intelligence agencies. Their coordinated operation targeted suspected narcotics movement within India’s maritime jurisdiction.
Drug seizure highlights inter-agency maritime coordination
The authorities are now conducting further investigation to identify the wider network behind the consignment. They are also seeking to establish the intended recipients of the seized drugs.
Shah said the operation reflected the role of intelligence-led coordination in securing India’s maritime borders. He described cooperation among the agencies as an important part of the action.
The government has also outlined a broader policy framework for tackling narcotics. The Vision Document on Drug Control (2026–2029) provides a roadmap for strengthening enforcement and disrupting drug networks.
According to the statement, the document also focuses on protecting young people and society from narcotics. The government has linked the strategy to its stated objective of creating a safer and healthier Nasha-Mukt Bharat.
The latest drug seizure adds to the enforcement measures outlined under the 2026–2029 vision document. Meanwhile, investigators will continue examining the seized boat, the arrested individuals and the wider network associated with the consignment.
