Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will hold a special meeting with ministers on October 12 to review Telangana drought conditions and the impact of El Niño. The meeting will focus on rainfall shortages, farmers’ difficulties and urgent measures for affected areas.
The discussions will cover agriculture, irrigation, drinking water supply and rising electricity demand. In particular, the government will assess the needs of areas that have received below-normal rainfall.
The State Cabinet recently held detailed discussions on the rainfall deficit. According to information released by the government, Telangana recorded 17 per cent less rainfall than normal amid El Niño conditions. Nearly 235 mandals faced drought-like conditions.
Telangana drought conditions prompt review of farmer relief
The State government has already adopted a resolution in the Assembly seeking central assistance for drought-hit areas. It urged the Centre to declare drought-affected mandals and provide adequate financial support. Additionally, the government sought a special package of Rs 20,000 crore.
The October 12 meeting is expected to examine relief measures for areas facing rainfall shortages. Ministers will also review an action plan prepared by a Cabinet subcommittee to address the impact on agriculture and other essential sectors.
Meanwhile, the discussions may cover a proposed all-party meeting and suggestions from farmers’ organisations. The government is also expected to consider recommendations from experts across different sectors before deciding on further measures.
Water, power and agriculture to feature in discussions
The meeting will assess immediate requirements for irrigation and drinking water. Ministers will also examine the impact of increased electricity demand and measures to support farmers.
As part of the review, the government will consider interventions for affected mandals and the financial assistance needed to tackle the rainfall deficit. The proposed discussions will bring together the State’s priorities on agriculture, water supply and electricity requirements.
