Hyderabad: Telangana Rakshana Sena president Kalvakuntla Kavitha accused Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of compromising the State’s water interests over the Polavaram-Banakacherla project. She alleged that the government lacked a clear position on river water use and had failed to protect Telangana’s share. Kavitha also questioned the State’s response to proposed links between the Godavari and Cauvery rivers.
Kavitha said Telangana’s position became clear during meetings of the National Water Development Agency (NWDA). According to her, officials from Telangana had urged the agency to consider linking the Godavari and Cauvery rivers through the Somasila-Tupakulagudem route. However, she alleged that Revanth Reddy had agreed to the Polavaram-Banakacherla project at a Southern Zonal Council meeting.
She said Union Home Minister Amit Shah had chaired that meeting. Kavitha claimed the Chief Minister’s position at the meeting contradicted the stand taken by Telangana officials.
Kavitha raises concerns over 250 TMC Godavari water share
Kavitha recalled that Telangana Jagruthi had opposed the Polavaram-Banakacherla project in 2024. She said the organisation had warned about its possible impact on Telangana’s water rights. It had also demanded that Andhra Pradesh stop its proposed project.
She alleged that Revanth Reddy was handing over Telangana’s rightful share of 250 TMC of Godavari water to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. Kavitha described this alleged move as handing over the State’s interests to another government.
She also criticised Revanth Reddy over a meeting convened by the Union Jal Shakti Minister. The meeting involved the Chief Ministers of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Kavitha alleged that Revanth Reddy had agreed to the project, while the latter later made false statements to the media.
According to Kavitha, the Andhra Pradesh government was pressuring the Centre to take up the project as part of river interlinking. She alleged that the State was pursuing the proposal with the Telangana Chief Minister’s approval.
Kavitha urged the Telangana government to recognise the project’s possible impact on the State’s water interests. She demanded that it withdraw immediately from all Centre-led consultations on the proposal. She also called on Revanth Reddy to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and seek the Centre’s intervention to stop the project.
