New Delhi: India is building a secure and scalable cloud infrastructure. The system is also AI-ready. It aims to support digital governance, private sector collaboration, and citizen empowerment. This effort responds to rising demand for cloud services across government, private, and social sectors.
At the same time, the adoption of AI-enabled applications is increasing. Moreover, rapid digital transformation has accelerated the need for robust cloud systems. These systems help deliver e-Governance services efficiently and securely.
To meet these needs, the Government of India has set up a national cloud infrastructure. The initiative operates under the Digital India programme.
AI-ready cloud infrastructure strengthens digital governance delivery
Under this framework, the “GI Cloud”, known as MeghRaj, offers secure and elastic cloud services. It supports the delivery of e-Governance applications. In particular, its features include scalability, elasticity, and pay-per-use metering. Additionally, it enables self-service provisioning and rapid application deployment. It also allows on-demand service delivery.
Meanwhile, the National Informatics Centre provides cloud services to various Ministries and Departments. At present, 2,170 Ministries and Departments host their cloud-based applications on MeghRaj.
Furthermore, to support cloud needs at both central and state levels, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has empaneled 26 cloud service providers. These providers cleared detailed security audits. The Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification Directorate conducted the audits. The process followed international security standards, including ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, and ISO 20000.
