New Delhi: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the government will deploy 1,000 advisory personnel across the country to help businesses maximise the benefits of the India-UK CETA, which will come into force on July 15, 2026.
The minister also announced an upgraded trade portal to support exporters and businesses. He said both initiatives would help companies understand the agreement and expand trade with the United Kingdom.
The announcement came during the 10th Annual UK-India Week in London. The minister said the India-UK CETA is India’s most comprehensive free trade agreement and is expected to increase bilateral trade by GBP 25.5 billion annually.
Agreement expands opportunities beyond trade
Piyush Goyal said the India-UK partnership now covers technology, sovereign AI, defence, critical minerals and clean energy. Moreover, he said the agreement would improve market access, strengthen investment and create fresh opportunities in goods and services.
At a reception hosted by the High Commission of India and FICCI, the minister welcomed a large Indian business delegation. The group included companies from Tier-II and Tier-III cities as well as several first-time exporters.
Furthermore, Goyal said eligible Indian professionals working in the UK would receive a five-year exemption from social security contributions under the agreement. He added that they could invest those savings in tax-free provident fund accounts in India.
The minister also highlighted regional partnerships such as Birmingham-Gujarat and Manchester-Maharashtra. He said these collaborations would drive future economic growth between both countries.
Finally, Goyal urged Indian businesses to adopt global quality standards and strengthen Brand India. He said the agreement offers new opportunities for exports, investment and long-term economic growth.
