PMKSY drives food processing infrastructure growth

New Delhi: The Ministry of Food Processing Industries has approved 1,607 PMKSY projects nationwide as of December 31, 2025, strengthening food processing infrastructure and supporting over 36 lakh farmers.

Minister of State Ravneet Singh gave this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on February 12. He said the ministry has implemented the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana since 2017. The ministry runs PMKSY projects as a demand-driven Central Sector umbrella scheme. It invites applications through Expressions of Interest based on fund availability.

Since January 2025, the ministry has not approved any PMKSY projects in Jharkhand or Odisha. However, since inception, it cleared two projects in Jharkhand with ₹0.93 crore in grants. It also sanctioned six projects in Nabrangpur constituency of Odisha with ₹23.62 crore in grants.

As of December 31, 2025, the ministry had operationalised 1,196 out of 1,607 PMKSY projects. These projects have benefited 36,10,782 farmers across the country. Notably, 7,150 farmers in Nabrangpur, 1,37,852 in Rajasthan and 53,203 in Jammu and Kashmir have gained from the scheme.

Additional outlay accelerates PMKSY projects expansion

The Cabinet has cleared an additional ₹1,000 crore for PMKSY projects. The government has earmarked ₹500 crore each for 50 Multi-Product Food Irradiation Units and 100 Food Testing Laboratories. In addition, it raised the original ₹4,600 crore outlay by ₹920 crore, marking a 20% increase.

After the enhanced allocation, the ministry issued an Expression of Interest on May 27, 2025, for 50 Food Irradiation Units. The EoI will remain open until February 28, 2026. So far, the ministry has cleared 14 irradiation projects, but none are in Jharkhand or Odisha.

Further, the ministry issued another EoI on November 21, 2025, for 100 Food Testing Laboratories. It will close this EoI on February 27, 2026. As of now, the ministry has not cleared any such projects in Jharkhand or Odisha under the additional outlay.

PMKSY projects have increased demand for farm produce used as raw material in food processing industries. Consequently, farmers receive better prices and improve farm gate profitability. The scheme has generated 4,69,403 jobs nationwide, including 4,249 in Nabrangpur constituency of Odisha.

However, the ministry has not approved any PMKSY projects in Hazaribagh and Ramgarh districts of Jharkhand.
