New Delhi: The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has realised ₹2.40 crore under the ABS framework in the last 45 days from entities engaged in research and commercial use of biological resources.
According to PIB Delhi, the authority received the amount from 10 applications linked to the seed and animal feed and cosmetic sectors. The collections form part of the Access and Benefit-Sharing mechanism mandated under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.
Companies used several agricultural biological resources for product development. These included hybrids and varieties of rice, onion, bitter gourd, mustard, cotton, bottle gourd, brinjal, chilli, cucumber, okra, ridge gourd, tomato and seaweed. Notably, M/s Pioneer Overseas Corporation contributed ₹2.30 crore for commercial use of mustard and rice hybrids.
In addition, M/s East West Seeds India Pvt. Ltd., M/s Advanta Enterprises Ltd., M/s Tokita Seed India Pvt. Ltd., M/s Avalo Inc and M/s Sea6 Energy Pvt. Ltd. made contributions. These firms used biological resources to develop improved and hybrid seed varieties, thereby boosting the agro-economy.
ABS framework collections cross ₹266 crore cumulatively
Under the ABS framework, the authority will share benefits with institutes, farmers, local communities and Biodiversity Management Committees that provided parental seed lines. This mechanism supports livelihoods and promotes conservation and sustainable use at the grassroots level.
In recent years, the NBA has introduced simpler and transparent procedures to ease compliance. At the same time, it has safeguarded the interests of local communities. The seed sector has emerged as a leading contributor under the ABS framework.
During the current financial year 2025-26, the NBA realised ₹3.42 crore from the seed sector alone. With the latest realisation, cumulative collections have crossed ₹266 crore, or about 29 million USD. Of this, ₹83 crore came from the seed sector, making it the second-largest contributor after Red Sanders.
The NBA continues to implement India’s commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nagoya Protocol on ABS. It also contributes to national biodiversity targets and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, especially Target-13 that emphasises legislative measures for the ABS framework.
