Amit Shah praises Sarvam AI for strengthening indigenous AI models

New Delhi: Union Minister Amit Shah said Sarvam AI exemplified India’s technological future, as he highlighted its work on indigenous AI models during the India AI Impact Summit 2026. He said the company was ensuring that advanced technology reached every citizen. He added that such innovation supported the vision of Viksit Bharat.

Shah noted that India’s rise as a digital power depended on building artificial intelligence systems aligned with national priorities. He stressed that AI systems must reflect Indian languages, local datasets, and real-world governance needs. According to him, homegrown platforms would reduce dependence on foreign AI infrastructure.

Sarvam AI, selected under the Innovation Centre pillar of the IndiaAI Mission, received ₹246.72 crore in financial and compute support to develop indigenous AI models. The company is building large language and speech models tailored for Indian languages and public services. These systems include voice interfaces, document processing tools, and citizen-centric applications. As a result, they improve accessibility and multilingual communication.

Indigenous AI models under IndiaAI Mission support

Sarvam AI has developed several foundational tools. Bulbul provides text-to-speech services in 11 Indian languages with 39 distinct voices. Saaras supports speech-to-text across all 22 scheduled languages and handles telephony audio and code-mixed speech. Vision processes documents in 22+ Indian languages, including mixed scripts and handwritten text.

In addition, the company built a full-stack sovereign AI ecosystem entirely within India. Its enterprise platforms support over 100 million interactions with low latency. The ecosystem integrates compute infrastructure, foundational models, and real-world applications. Therefore, it enables enterprises and governments to deploy AI solutions quickly and securely.

Sarvam AI has also entered strategic public partnerships. UIDAI partnered with the company to strengthen Aadhaar services through AI-driven voice interaction and real-time fraud detection. The Government of Odisha is establishing a 50MW Sovereign AI Capacity Hub with Sarvam AI to enhance compute capacity and language skilling. Meanwhile, the Government of Tamil Nadu and IIT Madras are collaborating with the firm to develop Digital Sangam, a Sovereign AI Research Park anchored by a 20MW AI data centre.

Through these initiatives, Sarvam AI is expanding India’s sovereign AI infrastructure. It is also strengthening open innovation across startups, academia, and industry.
