CWG 2030 hosting fuels Fit India cycling drive

New Delhi: CWG 2030 hosting received strong backing from top athletes as the 62nd edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle took place at more than 1000 locations across the country.

Rupinder Pal Singh and Rohit Tokas welcomed the decision to award India the Commonwealth Games after a gap of 20 years. They said the development underlined India’s growing stature in global sport and strengthened its Olympic aspirations for 2036.

Rupinder Pal Singh credited the Union Government, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Indian Olympic Association and National Sports Federations for securing the event. He said hosting the Games would inspire athletes and allow them to compete before home fans. He also recalled that India won 100 medals at the 2010 Delhi edition and expressed confidence of a similar show in 2030.

He added that hockey and shooting were dropped from the Birmingham edition. However, he hoped those disciplines would return in 2030 and further motivate players.

CWG 2030 hosting aligns with nationwide Fit India push

The nationwide cycling drive coincided with the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation completing 75 years of service. More than 500 participants joined Rupinder at the Indira Gandhi Stadium event. He urged citizens to dedicate at least 30 minutes daily to fitness to tackle lifestyle diseases.

Rohit Tokas said CWG 2030 hosting would accelerate sports infrastructure growth. He added that competing before a home crowd offers unmatched motivation for athletes. He also noted that major events create long-term benefits for young sportspersons.

The 62nd edition of the cycling initiative formed part of the Fit India movement launched in December 2024. The programme promotes fitness, sustainable mobility and environmental awareness. So far, over 25 lakh citizens have participated across more than 2 lakh locations.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports organises the drive with support from national sports bodies and partner organisations. Officials conducted events simultaneously across States and Union Territories, including SAI centres and Khelo India facilities.
