Cabinet clears Srinagar airport expansion project

New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the Srinagar airport expansion project at an estimated cost of ₹1,677 crore to strengthen aviation infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the meeting that cleared the development of a new Civil Enclave at Srinagar International Airport. Authorities will execute the project on 73.18 acres within the Budgam Airbase of the Indian Air Force. The plan also includes construction of barracks for security personnel.

The new terminal building will span 71,500 square metres, including 20,659 square metres of existing structure. It will handle 2,900 passengers during peak hours and support an annual capacity of 10 million passengers. The expanded apron will provide 15 aircraft parking bays, including one widebody Code E bay. Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force will continue to operate the 3,658-metre runway.

Officials will also construct a multi-level car parking facility with space for 1,000 cars. The Airports Authority of India operates the airport, which received international status in 2005 and lies about 12 kilometres from Srinagar city.

Srinagar airport expansion to boost tourism and economy

The new terminal will combine modern architecture with traditional Kashmiri design elements. Designers plan to incorporate intricate woodwork and locally inspired craftsmanship. At the same time, planners will ensure streamlined passenger processing areas, spacious lounges and advanced security systems.

Importantly, the project integrates sustainability measures. Authorities will install water harvesting systems and maximise natural lighting to cut energy use. They will also use locally sourced eco-friendly materials to reduce the carbon footprint. The project aims to secure a 5-star GRIHA rating.

Officials expect the Srinagar airport expansion to enhance connectivity to major attractions such as Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple and the Mughal Gardens. Consequently, improved access could boost tourism and generate employment opportunities. The development is also likely to attract investment and strengthen Srinagar’s position as a key tourist and economic destination.
