New Delhi: The Union government is implementing the PM-eBus Sewa scheme to strengthen urban transport by deploying 10,000 electric buses across cities. The initiative is being executed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
The scheme targets cities with populations between three lakh and 40 lakh. It also includes clusters of nearby towns, state capitals, and capital cities in North Eastern and hilly regions with populations below three lakh.
Officials said PM-eBus Sewa will help many cities introduce organised public transport systems. In addition, it will support the transition to electric mobility for a large number of urban centres.
The programme also provides financial assistance for infrastructure. Therefore, the government is offering full financial support for Behind-the-Meter power infrastructure required for operating electric buses.
More than 200 infrastructure proposals have already been approved under the scheme. These include civil depots and power infrastructure projects to support the operation of e-buses.
PM-eBus Sewa expands electric bus infrastructure across states
The government has sanctioned 10,000 electric buses for deployment across 116 cities in 20 states and six Union Territories. Authorities have also approved more than 500 circuit kilometres of high-tension power lines and depot construction on over 300 acres of land.
The government has sanctioned ₹1,254.38 crore for infrastructure development under the scheme. Out of this amount, ₹483.70 crore has been spent on power infrastructure and depot construction projects.
Officials estimate that the scheme could generate between 45,000 and 55,000 direct jobs during its implementation period.
Under the programme, 200 electric buses have been sanctioned for Jabalpur. Authorities have also signed the concession agreement for the project in February 2026.
