Mumbai: The BCCI selection committee appointed Shubman Gill as India’s new ODI captain on Saturday. The 24-year-old already leads the Test team. He will now captain India in both formats.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain in the squad for the three-match ODI series. However, they will play under Gill’s leadership. The first ODI will take place in Perth on October 19. The second and third matches are scheduled for Adelaide on October 23 and Sydney on October 25. After the ODIs, India will play a five-match T20 series with Suryakumar Yadav as captain.
Agarkar backs Gill for leadership
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the panel discussed the change with Rohit Sharma before announcing it. He explained that the roles of Rohit and Kohli in the 2027 World Cup are still undecided. “It’s not feasible to have three different captains for three formats,” Agarkar said. He confirmed Gill’s leadership for both Tests and ODIs.
