Delhi High Court directs ECI on Kavitha party plea

Hyderabad: The Delhi High Court directed the Election Commission of India to decide on the Kavitha party plea at the earliest regarding her new political outfit.

The court heard the matter on Thursday in connection with the proposed Telangana Praja Jagruthi Party. During the hearing, counsel for Kalvakuntla Kavitha said technical issues in the application had been corrected and resubmitted.

In response, the ECI informed the court that it would take a decision soon. Therefore, the bench asked the Commission to act expeditiously on the request.

Kavitha had filed the application on January 23 under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. However, the Commission earlier flagged several deficiencies in the proposal.

As a result, she approached the High Court seeking directions for faster processing. Earlier, on February 27, the ECI told the court that it had already communicated the issues.

Kavitha party plea follows revised application submission

Meanwhile, the court had adjourned the previous hearing due to the absence of Kavitha’s counsel. It later resumed proceedings on March 19 after the revised application was filed.

With corrections in place, the court emphasised the need for a timely decision. In addition, it noted that the matter required prompt consideration.

Kavitha is seeking to register the Telangana Praja Jagruthi Party ahead of upcoming elections. Moreover, the move is part of her efforts to expand her political presence in Telangana.

The court’s direction is expected to accelerate the decision-making process. Officials said the ECI will examine the revised application before issuing its order.
