Vivek Venkatswamy outlines Gig Workers Bill in Assembly

Hyderabad: The Gig Workers Bill Telangana was highlighted in the Assembly by Industries Minister Vivek Venkatswamy, who outlined steps to protect gig workers and improve their welfare.

He said Rahul Gandhi interacted with gig workers during the Bharat Jodo Yatra and understood their challenges. These workers often lack job security, minimum wages and health protection.

Gig Workers Bill Telangana focuses on welfare measures

Venkatswamy said Rahul Gandhi suggested bringing a law after consulting aggregators and labour unions.

Following this, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy initiated stakeholder consultations and prepared a draft Bill.

The government placed the draft in the public domain for 30 days and received about 65 suggestions. A committee led by the Chief Secretary reviewed these inputs.

The minister said he held five rounds of discussions with aggregators and unions after taking office.

Key provisions and implementation plan

The Bill proposes a 20-member board with representatives from all stakeholders. This board will meet every three months.

The government will also set up another committee after the Bill becomes law. This panel will frame detailed rules in consultation with stakeholders.

The minister said Telangana has around 4 lakh gig workers. He stressed that aggregators must share responsibility for their welfare.

The Bill includes a registration system for workers. Each worker will receive a unique ID. This will help extend social security schemes to them.

Authorities will impose penalties on aggregators who violate the law.

Overall, the Gig Workers Bill Telangana aims to provide protection, accountability and structured support for gig workers.
