Railways record growth in passenger and freight traffic in 2025–26

New Delhi: Indian Railways reported Railways record growth in passenger traffic and freight movement during 2025–26, setting new benchmarks in both segments.

The national transporter carried 741 crore passengers during the fiscal year. This marked a 3.54% increase compared to 716 crore passengers in 2024–25. At the same time, passenger revenue rose to about ₹80,000 crore. This reflected a 5.96% increase from ₹75,500 crore recorded in the previous year.

Officials said the rise in passenger numbers showed growing dependence on rail travel across the country. Moreover, improved services and capacity expansion supported the steady increase in usage. As a result, Indian Railways strengthened its role in providing accessible and reliable mobility.

Freight operations also recorded strong performance during the same period. The transporter moved 1670 million tonnes of cargo, which marked a 3.25% increase over the previous year. In addition, the number of wagons handled increased by 4.56%, indicating higher operational efficiency.

Railways record growth driven by rising freight demand

Freight expansion was led by key sectors such as fertilisers and iron and steel. Both segments recorded over 13% growth, contributing significantly to overall loading. Meanwhile, iron ore transportation rose by 6.74%, while cement movement increased by 4.74%.

Railway zones such as South Western Railway, North Central Railway, East Coast Railway, and West Central Railway registered double-digit growth in freight loading. These zones played a key role in achieving higher cargo volumes.

Officials noted that the consistent rise in freight volumes reflected increasing demand for cost-effective logistics solutions. Rail transport remained a preferred option for bulk commodities due to its efficiency and scale.

The combined growth in passenger and freight segments highlighted operational improvements across the network. It also underlined the importance of railways in supporting economic activity and ensuring smooth movement of goods and people.
