New Delhi: Improving passenger experience remains the top priority of Indian Railways, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said during a review meeting with officials.
He emphasised that providing a comfortable journey for poor and middle-class passengers should guide all efforts. Therefore, he urged officials to work collectively to enhance services.
The minister congratulated railway staff for reducing accidents and achieving record freight loading. In addition, he praised the efficient operation of special trains during festivals.
He also highlighted improvements in punctuality, noting that several zones maintained performance above 85 per cent despite operational challenges.
Passenger experience focus drives railway reforms
Ashwini Vaishnaw said railway stations represent the face of Indian Railways and must remain clean and well-maintained. He directed officials to prioritise cleanliness and better amenities.
Moreover, he stressed the need for effective crowd management during peak travel periods. As a result, passengers should be able to access platforms smoothly without inconvenience.
The minister also reviewed land acquisition issues for ongoing projects and asked officials to speed up the process. He suggested seeking expert support where needed.
Addressing railway land encroachment, he called for a humane approach to ensure livelihoods are not affected. He said coordination with state governments is essential.
Further, the Railways will prioritise construction of underpasses over foot overbridges wherever feasible. These will improve accessibility and ease of movement.
Pilot projects will be launched across the country to build such underpasses. They will be designed for pedestrians as well as vehicles like cycles and motorcycles.
The minister said that with a passenger-centric approach, Indian Railways will continue to improve safety, service quality and overall travel experience.
