New Delhi: India and South Korea have signed an agreement to strengthen shipbuilding skill development and enhance the country’s maritime workforce.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) signed a Plan of Implementation with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) on April 2. Therefore, the initiative marks a major step in building a future-ready shipbuilding ecosystem.
The project aligns with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and aims to position shipbuilding as a key driver of economic growth. It focuses on developing skilled and professional talent for the marine sector.
Shipbuilding skill development to boost maritime workforce
Under the collaboration, Korean agencies will conduct detailed research on India’s shipbuilding and marine engineering industries. This includes workforce mapping and skill gap assessment.
In addition, the project will create a master plan and roadmap for human resource development. As a result, it will support structured training and capacity building in the sector.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the partnership will help build a globally competitive maritime ecosystem. He added that it will generate employment and strengthen institutional capacity.
The initiative will also include bilateral workshops in India and South Korea. These will bring together industry experts, policymakers and academic institutions.
Further, both sides are in advanced discussions to set up a Shipbuilding Workforce Development and Technology Cooperation Center in India. This centre will focus on vocational training and advanced skill development.
The collaboration is expected to enhance India’s shipbuilding capabilities and global competitiveness. It also reinforces efforts to build a self-reliant and future-ready maritime sector.
