Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi president Kalvakuntla Kavitha warned of a delimitation agitation if the Centre reduces Telangana’s political representation.
She said any attempt to dilute the state’s share in Parliament would trigger a large public movement. Moreover, she cautioned that the agitation could match the intensity of the Telangana statehood movement.
Kavitha argued that southern states had led the country in economic growth and population control. Therefore, she said they should not face penalties through policy changes linked to delimitation.
She noted that Telangana currently holds a 3.13% share in Parliament. She added that this share must remain the minimum benchmark under any future exercise.
Delimitation agitation may extend from Parliament to streets
Kavitha said her party’s position on the delimitation agitation remained firm and non-negotiable. Consequently, she warned of strong resistance if representation is reduced.
She stated that the fight would continue both inside Parliament and on the streets if required. At the same time, she said Telangana Jagruthi would mobilise people against what she described as demographic injustice.
Kavitha also criticised the Centre for linking the Women’s Reservation Bill with delimitation. She said this approach created confusion and raised questions about intent.
Further, she questioned the use of older census data for implementing the bill. Meanwhile, she reiterated that population-based redistribution could disadvantage southern states.
