New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India ordered FASTag VRN validation to fix data mismatches and strengthen toll enforcement across highways.
NHAI directed all FASTag issuer banks to immediately verify vehicle registration numbers linked to FASTags. The move followed complaints about mismatches between recorded VRNs and actual number plates.
Officials said such discrepancies could weaken enforcement systems and lead to revenue loss. They added that violations may also attract penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
NHAI noted that many mismatches involved FASTags issued before integration with the VAHAN database. During that period, verification relied more on manual processes, which increased the risk of errors.
FASTag VRN validation critical for MLFF rollout
NHAI said FASTag VRN validation was essential for upcoming Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling systems. Under this system, authorities will issue electronic notices based on verified vehicle data.
Therefore, accurate vehicle identification has become crucial for enforcement and compliance. In response, NHAI instructed banks to urgently verify all FASTags issued by them.
Authorities also directed banks to blacklist FASTags linked to incorrect or invalid registration numbers. This action will follow existing government guidelines.
Officials said the initiative would improve transparency and prevent misuse of FASTags. They added that better data accuracy would enhance efficiency and user experience on National Highways.
