Hyderabad: The Telangana government decided to bear the additional Haj travel burden for pilgrims after a sharp rise in travel costs linked to developments in West Asia.
Nearly 7,000 pilgrims from the state registered for Haj this year. However, rising fuel prices increased overall travel expenses and raised concerns among applicants.
Officials said geopolitical tensions, including those involving Iran and the United States, contributed to higher aviation costs. As a result, the Haj travel burden on pilgrims increased significantly.
Many families traditionally save for years to undertake the pilgrimage. Therefore, the sudden rise in expenses created financial strain for several applicants.
Haj travel burden rises amid fuel cost pressures
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy reviewed the situation and directed that the state would bear the additional cost. The move aims to ensure that pilgrims can complete their journey without financial hardship.
The decision followed concerns that higher travel costs could discourage or prevent pilgrims from undertaking Haj this year. Consequently, the government stepped in to provide relief.
Officials are expected to finalise modalities for implementing the support. These include identifying cost components and coordinating with Haj authorities.
The government’s decision is likely to benefit thousands of families preparing for the pilgrimage. It also reflects efforts to support citizens facing unexpected financial pressures.
Authorities said further updates on disbursement and execution would be issued soon.
