New Delhi: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday announced a series of frugality measures across the Agriculture and Rural Development Ministries following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for restraint, savings and self-reliance.
During a review meeting in New Delhi, the minister approved steps aimed at reducing government expenditure, conserving fuel and limiting power consumption. Officials from the Agriculture Department, Rural Development Department, ICAR and Land Resources Department attended the meeting.
The minister said two upcoming zonal agriculture conferences in Guwahati and Visakhapatnam would now take place virtually instead of physical mode. Officials said the move would reduce travel, accommodation and logistics expenses.
Chouhan also announced a rotational work-from-home policy for nearly 20 per cent of ministry employees. However, he said regular office work, meetings and state coordination should continue without disruption.
Officials also decided to introduce a car-pooling system once a week for senior officers to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle expenses. In addition, ministries were instructed to limit unnecessary electricity use in offices.
Frugality measures include campaign on edible oil use
The Union Minister said officials collectively resolved not to purchase gold for one year except during weddings or important family occasions. He described the decision as a voluntary step in the national interest.
Meanwhile, the ministry also decided to launch a public awareness campaign to reduce excessive edible oil consumption. Officials said the campaign would support healthier food habits and reduce dependence on edible oil imports.
Chouhan further announced a 15-day “Save the Farm Campaign” from June 1. Scientists and agriculture experts will visit villages and advise farmers on balanced fertilizer use based on soil conditions.
The minister said natural farming and scientific agriculture would remain important priorities ahead of the Kharif season. He added that the government would continue efforts to protect soil health and improve farm sustainability.
