New Delhi: PM-WANI reforms introduced by the Department of Telecommunications aim to simplify public Wi-Fi access through QR-based login, short-duration plans and standardised hotspot names across India.
The Department of Telecommunications issued two circulars on May 22, 2026 directing stakeholders to implement the revised guidelines within eight weeks.
Under the changes, users can now access Wi-Fi on laptops and secondary devices through QR-based authentication linked to smartphones.
Officials said the new system would reduce login delays and improve user convenience at public hotspots.
The government also advised operators to introduce flexible internet plans with validity periods of 15, 30 and 60 minutes.
According to the department, the short-duration plans would support students, commuters, travellers and small businesses seeking affordable internet access.
The reforms also standardised hotspot names using PMWANI branding to help users easily identify authentic public Wi-Fi networks.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the initiative formed part of efforts to strengthen digital connectivity and improve public access to affordable internet services.
QR login and short plans drive PM-WANI reforms
Minister of State for Communications Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani recently reviewed implementation measures with officials and industry stakeholders.
He said QR-based login would allow users to connect laptops by scanning a code through an authenticated smartphone application.
Dr. Pemmasani also said hotspot operators were advised to offer low-cost sachet-style plans for brief internet use.
According to the minister, public Wi-Fi now functions as an important public utility in the digital era.
The PM-WANI framework operates through a distributed network of Public Data Offices, Public Data Office Aggregators and app providers.
Officials said the reforms aimed to improve accessibility, interoperability and nationwide adoption of public Wi-Fi infrastructure under the Digital India initiative.
The new features are expected to become operational across the ecosystem by July 2026.
PM-WANI is our platform for universal public Wi-Fi access — and we are making it easier to use. QR-based login now lets you connect your laptop simply by scanning a code on your phone.
