New Delhi: Indian Railways has approved a ₹226 crore Digital signalling upgrade for 13 stations on the Durg-Taroki section of Raipur Division in South East Central Railway (SECR). The Digital signalling upgrade will replace the existing Panel Interlocking system with modern Electronic Interlocking technology, improving railway safety, signalling reliability and operational efficiency.
The project covers 13 stations, including Marauda, Risama, Gundardehi, Latabor, Balod, Kusumkasa, Dalli Rajhara, Gudum, Bhanupratappur, Keoti, Antagarh, Taroki and Raipur Store Depot. Railway authorities said the modernisation will strengthen train operations on this important section of the SECR network.
The approved project forms part of Indian Railways’ nationwide programme to modernise signalling systems through advanced technology. It aims to improve operational flexibility while supporting the growing demand for passenger and freight services.
Digital signalling upgrade strengthens train operations
Electronic Interlocking is an advanced signalling system that automatically sets train routes and controls signalling functions with multiple safety checks. Consequently, it reduces the possibility of human error and minimises signalling failures during operations.
The technology also enables railway officials to restore services more quickly during operational disruptions. As a result, trains can maintain better punctuality and passengers benefit from safer and more reliable journeys.
The upgraded signalling network will support higher operational efficiency across the Durg-Taroki section. Furthermore, it will create a stronger technological foundation for handling future increases in passenger and freight traffic.
Indian Railways has been expanding the use of modern signalling systems across high-density routes to improve safety standards and operational performance. The latest approval reflects the organisation’s continued focus on adopting technology-driven solutions that enhance railway infrastructure across the country.
Officials said replacing the ageing Panel Interlocking system with Electronic Interlocking will improve coordination between signalling equipment and train movements. Moreover, the project will strengthen the resilience of railway operations and reduce maintenance requirements over the long term.
The investment also supports Indian Railways’ broader objective of building a safer, smarter and more efficient rail network capable of meeting future transportation needs while delivering reliable services to passengers and freight customers.
