Hyderabad: Senior BRS leader T. Harish Rao on Thursday said the party would cancel the Future City project if it returned to power in Telangana and restore the earlier Pharma City proposal.
During his tour of the United States, Harish Rao alleged that the Congress government was using the Future City project for real estate business instead of industrial development. He claimed the previous Pharma City proposal would generate large-scale employment opportunities for youth in Telangana.
According to the BRS leader, the Congress government halted the Pharma City plan because it feared political credit would go to the previous BRS administration.
Harish Rao further said the state required projects that could strengthen industrial growth and employment generation rather than politically driven land development initiatives.
The remarks intensified the ongoing political debate surrounding land pooling and development plans linked to the proposed project area.
Future City project triggers political confrontation
Meanwhile, Medak MP Madhavaneni Raghunandan Rao strongly criticised Harish Rao’s comments and accused both the Congress and BRS of politicising development plans.
The BJP leader said the region should not become only a Pharma City or a Future City. Instead, he suggested that the area should develop as a “Farmers City” focused on agricultural growth and farmer welfare.
Raghunandan Rao questioned why the BRS government failed to establish major industrial projects during its 10-year rule in Telangana. He also said the Centre had earlier granted environmental clearances to attract investments and improve employment opportunities in the region.
Further, he stated that the BJP would prioritise development of the area as a Farmers City if the party came to power in the state.
Political tensions over the Future City project and land development proposals have increased in recent weeks, with parties trading allegations over industrial policy, land use and employment promises.
