New Delhi: Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H. D. Kumaraswamy chaired a high-level consultation in New Delhi on Tuesday to accelerate electric mobility through wider adoption of e-buses and e-trucks across India.
The meeting brought together fleet operators, transport aggregators, financial institutions, leasing companies and industry representatives involved in the electric vehicle sector. Officials discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the government and private stakeholders for faster deployment of electric commercial vehicles.
Senior Ministry of Heavy Industries officials, including Secretary Kamran Rizvi and Additional Secretary Dr. Hanif Qureshi, also attended the consultation and shared details about the future roadmap for sustainable transport systems.
Addressing the participants, Kumaraswamy said electric buses would become the backbone of passenger transport in the future. He added that electric trucks would transform logistics and freight transportation across the country.
The Union Minister said India was witnessing a major transition towards cleaner and more efficient transport systems. Moreover, he stressed that the government wanted to make the shift towards electric mobility practical, inclusive and commercially sustainable.
Kumaraswamy stated that the consultation helped the government understand operational realities faced by transport operators and fleet owners. He also described stakeholder feedback as important for future policymaking.
Electric mobility discussions focus on industry support
During the meeting, participants shared concerns related to financing access, charging infrastructure, operational viability and fleet deployment challenges.
Industry representatives also discussed long-term ecosystem support needed for large-scale adoption of electric commercial vehicles across urban and freight transport networks.
The Union Minister said the initiative aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for sustainability, innovation and efficient public infrastructure. In addition, he stated that cleaner transport systems were essential for India’s future economic growth.
Stakeholders welcomed the Ministry’s outreach initiative and direct engagement with industry participants. They said stronger coordination between the government and operators would help build confidence in the electric vehicle sector.
Officials noted that discussions mainly focused on strengthening infrastructure and improving commercial feasibility for electric buses and trucks.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries described the consultation as an important step towards accelerating India’s transition to sustainable transport systems while encouraging active industry participation in future policy decisions.
