New Delhi: India secured approval to host the ITU PP-2030 conference after presenting its proposal at the International Telecommunication Union Council 2026 meeting in Geneva. The delegation confirmed that the Council accepted India’s proposal. Officials described the decision as a major milestone for India’s role in global telecom policy.
An Indian delegation led by Mukesh Kumar participated in the Council session held from 28 April to 8 May 2026. Representatives from the Department of Telecommunications engaged in discussions on digital cooperation, regional presence, membership issues, and event organisation. They also coordinated with India’s Permanent Representative in Geneva.
During the meeting, India formally presented its bid to host the ITU PP-2030 conference. The Council accepted the proposal, and final approval is expected at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2026 in Doha in November 2026. Officials said the decision reflects India’s growing engagement in global telecom governance.
ITU PP-2030 bid and global telecom engagement
India strengthened its campaign for elections within the ITU framework. The delegation hosted a networking reception on 30 April 2026 at the ITU premises. Representatives from 69 member states attended the event. India presented its candidatures for Council re-election and for Director of the Radio Communications Bureau. Revathi Mannepalli outlined her vision for the radio sector during the session.
On the sidelines of the Council meeting, officials held 15 bilateral meetings with member states. These discussions aimed to build support for India’s candidatures and expand cooperation. On 8 May 2026, Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia addressed the Council virtually. He announced India’s voluntary contribution to support WTSA resolutions covering 6G, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Public Infrastructure, and sustainable digital transformation.
India has served on the ITU Council since 1952. Officials said the acceptance of the ITU PP-2030 proposal reinforces India’s commitment to international digital standards and cooperation. They added that the decision will create further opportunities for leadership in telecom policy and global development initiatives.
