India-Seychelles agriculture cooperation strengthened with new ICAR MoU

New Delhi: India Seychelles agriculture cooperation received a major boost after the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Agriculture Department of Seychelles during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to the island nation.

The agreement aims to strengthen collaboration in agricultural research, education, technology transfer and capacity building. It also provides a framework for joint research programmes, exchanges of scientists, researchers and students, and the sharing of advanced agricultural technologies and best practices.

The two sides also signed a five-year Work Plan covering the period from 2026 to 2031 to implement the agreement.

Five-year plan focuses on sustainable farming

The work plan gives priority to climate-smart agriculture, horticulture, livestock development, post-harvest management and sustainable food and nutritional security.

Officials said the initiative will strengthen institutional partnerships, improve farm productivity and enhance technical expertise. It will also support sustainable agricultural development while addressing climate change and food security challenges.

The agreement forms part of India’s broader efforts to expand international agricultural partnerships. ICAR has already signed more than 100 Memoranda of Understanding with institutions worldwide.

The new partnership further strengthens India Seychelles agriculture cooperation and reinforces India’s engagement with Global South countries through research, innovation and sustainable agricultural development.
