New Delhi: India and Tanzania reviewed growing India Tanzania trade ties during the 5th Joint Trade Committee meeting held in Dar es Salaam on April 29–30.
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and Tanzania’s Permanent Secretary Samwel William Shelukindo co-chaired the session. They assessed progress since the last meeting in 2017 and reaffirmed commitment to stronger economic cooperation.
Officials noted that India Tanzania trade crossed $9.02 billion in 2025–26, up from $8.64 billion the previous year. Therefore, both sides highlighted steady growth and the need to expand engagement across sectors.
The meeting focused on easing trade barriers and improving business conditions. Discussions covered local currency trade, long-term visas for businesspersons and regulatory cooperation in pharmaceuticals.
India Tanzania trade expands across key sectors
Delegates explored cooperation in mining, agriculture and education. They also discussed skill development, MSME partnerships and research collaboration in emerging technologies.
India highlighted digital public infrastructure such as India Stack. Meanwhile, both sides examined opportunities in real-time payments, e-commerce and digital services.
Healthcare and energy cooperation also featured prominently. Officials discussed telemedicine, joint research and renewable energy projects. In addition, India offered support in railways, shipbuilding and port development.
Development cooperation remained a key pillar, with India extending over $1.1 billion in credit for water projects in Tanzania. These initiatives are expected to benefit more than 6 million people.
Business leaders from both countries attended a joint business meet held alongside the session. They stressed the importance of investment and deeper market integration.
The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to strengthen institutional mechanisms and accelerate implementation of projects. The next session will be held in New Delhi on mutually agreed dates.
