Hyderabad: Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy condemned the Kunamneni remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Telangana Assembly and demanded a public apology from the CPI MLA.
Reacting on Saturday, Kishan Reddy said legislators must limit debates to policies and governance. He said the Assembly was not a platform for personal attacks. Therefore, he asked Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao to withdraw his comments immediately.
The controversy arose during a debate on the proposed renaming of the MGNREGA scheme. While criticising the Centre’s approach to welfare schemes, Kunamneni targeted the Prime Minister’s “mindset.” He also made a reference to getting it “tested,” which triggered strong protests.
BJP legislators objected to the Kunamneni remarks and described them as objectionable. As a result, heated arguments broke out in the House. The protests disrupted normal proceedings.
Kishan Reddy said such language damaged the dignity of the Assembly. He added that failure to apologise should invite action. He urged Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar to intervene if Kunamneni refused to withdraw the remarks.
Kunamneni remarks spark disruption in Assembly
Following the Kunamneni remarks, BJP members demanded their immediate removal from the Assembly records. They said the House must protect constitutional decorum at all times.
The issue triggered chaos in the Assembly on Friday. Members raised slogans and sought a ruling from the Chair. The Speaker later assured the House that he would examine the matter as per procedure.
Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao made the comments while attacking the Centre over welfare schemes for the poor. However, the remarks shifted the debate away from policy issues.
The incident added to growing tensions in the Telangana Assembly. Recent sessions have witnessed repeated disruptions over Centre–State disputes.
