Hyderabad: Telangana government is planning to establish Modern grain silos at 20 locations across 10 major paddy-producing districts to strengthen storage infrastructure and improve procurement efficiency.
Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy reviewed the proposal during a meeting with representatives of leading grain storage and logistics companies at the Secretariat on Friday. He also asked the companies to submit detailed project reports before the government takes a final decision.
Officials said the proposed silo network will initially have a gross storage capacity of 50,000 metric tonnes. Moreover, the facilities will function alongside the existing procurement and storage system.
The government aims to improve post-harvest management, reduce storage losses and streamline grain movement across the state. However, Uttam Kumar Reddy clarified that the new system would complement the current procurement network rather than replace it.
He also directed officials to assess the financial implications before adopting the technology on a large scale.
Modern grain silos to support automated storage systems
Representatives of storage and logistics companies presented technology-driven grain handling solutions during the meeting. According to them, the proposed system integrates automated storage, digital monitoring and dedicated logistics infrastructure.
Under the model, authorities will sample and test incoming grain before granting digital approval for unloading. Subsequently, mechanised systems will transfer grain directly into storage facilities, reducing manual handling.
The companies explained that digital sensors continuously monitor temperature, moisture and storage conditions. As a result, authorities can maintain grain quality and minimise losses during storage.
Similar quality checks will take place at destination terminals before grain reaches the Public Distribution System or open market channels. Furthermore, company representatives described the model as a complete supply chain that protects grain from harvest to delivery.
Representatives of FAMSUN Storage Engineering Company Limited offered technical support for the proposed programme. They also highlighted their experience in developing large-scale grain storage projects, including facilities linked to the Food Corporation of India.
Uttam Kumar Reddy directed the companies to identify suitable locations, storage capacities and implementation strategies for the project. He said the government would examine the proposals as part of broader efforts to strengthen procurement, storage and distribution systems.
The Minister added that farmers would continue to receive seamless procurement services through Self-Help Groups, IKP centres and Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies while the state explores Modern grain silos for future expansion.
