Hyderabad: Leading Muslim organisations in Telangana urged the Congress leadership to increase Muslim representation Telangana governance by inducting another Muslim minister, nominating a Muslim MLC and ensuring a fair share in Rajya Sabha and other nominated posts.
Addressing a press conference at Hussami Manzil in Panje Shah, Amarat-e-Millat-e-Islamia Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Ameer Maulana Md Hussamuddin Sani Jafar Pasha released a representation addressed to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
The representation stated that Muslims constitute nearly 14% of Telangana’s population but currently have only one minister in the 16-member State Cabinet. It noted that Mohammad Azharuddin was inducted through the MLC route in October 2025 and handles Public Enterprises and Minorities Welfare portfolios.
Maulana Jafar Pasha said the community supported the Congress with expectations of development, participation and a fair role in governance. He argued that population-based justice should also reflect in political representation.
Muslim representation Telangana Cabinet and nominated posts
The letter said the Cabinet composition showed higher representation for certain communities despite Muslims having a significant population share. It highlighted that upper caste groups hold seven ministerial positions, while Muslims have only one berth.
The organisations also sought broader participation in chairmanships and other key positions. However, Maulana Jafar Pasha clarified that the demand was not for any particular individual but for greater inclusion of Muslim leaders.
He rejected arguments that lack of elected Muslim Congress legislators prevented representation. Instead, he said the party should strengthen candidate selection, leadership development and organisational support to improve Muslim electoral representation.
The representation compared Telangana with Karnataka and Kerala, where Congress-led arrangements provide greater Muslim participation in government structures. It stated that such models showed that political commitment could ensure inclusive representation.
Maulana Jafar Pasha warned that continued imbalance could influence the community’s future political approach towards the Congress. He said Muslims should not be viewed merely as a vote bank but as equal partners in governance and decision-making.
Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s slogan “jitni aabadi utna haq”, he argued that Muslims in Telangana deserved representation proportional to their population.
During the press conference, Maulana Jafar Pasha also urged Muslims to remain vigilant during the Special Intensive Revision process. He asked residents to cooperate with Booth Level Officers, verify their records and prepare necessary documents to avoid future complications.
