Hyderabad: National consensus delimitation was urged by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for a balanced approach to Lok Sabha seat expansion.
In an open letter issued on Tuesday, he proposed a hybrid model for seat allocation. He also asked the Centre to implement women’s reservation immediately. However, he said it should not be linked to any increase in seats.
Revanth Reddy clarified that delimitation, seat expansion and women’s reservation were separate issues. Therefore, he stressed that policymakers should not treat them as interconnected. He reaffirmed support for 33% reservation for women within the existing 543 seats.
He warned that increasing seats solely based on population could disturb federal balance. Moreover, he said such a move could reduce representation for southern states.
National consensus delimitation proposal highlights federal concerns
The Chief Minister said Telangana and other southern states contributed to population stability. He added that these states also showed strong economic and human development indicators. However, he noted that they already faced financial imbalances.
Therefore, he argued that a population-based model could further weaken their political voice. He stressed that a national consensus delimitation framework must address these concerns.
As an alternative, he proposed a hybrid model. Under this system, some seats would depend on population. Meanwhile, the rest would rely on economic indicators such as Gross State Domestic Product.
He said this approach would ensure fair representation. At the same time, it would avoid penalising states that achieved population control.
Revanth Reddy recalled that earlier governments deferred delimitation to protect national unity. Therefore, he urged the Centre to act cautiously and build consensus.
He described the issue as one of equity and national integrity. He also called on the Prime Minister to convene an all-party meeting. Such discussions, he said, should remain transparent and inclusive.
He added that decisions of this scale must promote unity among states. In addition, they should reflect the aspirations of all regions.
Revanth Reddy also wrote to Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Puducherry. He sought their support to build a national consensus delimitation approach.
