Hyderabad: PV Sindhu progressed to the second round of the Indonesia Open 2026 after defeating Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in straight games at the Istora Senayan Stadium in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The former world champion faced a strong challenge in the opening game. However, she held her nerve during crucial points and secured a 25-23 victory. She then controlled the second game and completed a 21-16 win to seal the match in straight games.
The victory extended Sindhu’s dominance over the Thai shuttler. It marked her 11th consecutive win against Busanan and improved her overall head-to-head record to 21-1.
Sindhu entered the tournament with renewed confidence after returning to the world’s top 10 rankings for the first time since 2023. The result provided another positive step in her efforts to regain consistent form on the international circuit.
The Indian star displayed composure under pressure during the opening game. Subsequently, she used her experience and attacking play to take charge of the contest and close out the match comfortably.
PV Sindhu sets up tougher challenge in Jakarta
With the opening-round hurdle cleared, Sindhu will now face a significantly tougher test in the second round. She will take on either top seed An Se Young of South Korea or Turkey’s Neslihan Arin.
Meanwhile, India recorded success in the men’s doubles event as Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun advanced to the next round with an impressive performance.
The Indian duo defeated Malaysia’s Tan Wee Kiong and Nur Mohd Azriyn 21-18, 21-10 in just 33 minutes. They dominated the second game and wrapped up the contest with ease.
However, Lakshya Sen’s campaign ended in the opening round. The Indian shuttler lost 21-19, 21-16 to Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan.
Alwi entered the Indonesia Open in strong form after defeating world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi at the Singapore Open last week. He carried that momentum into his match against Sen and secured a straight-games victory.
India will now look to Sindhu and its remaining doubles pairs to continue the country’s challenge at the prestigious Super 1000 tournament in Jakarta.
