Hyderabad: Telangana government began discussions on the proposed RTC merger with the state government after holding talks with RTC union leaders in Hyderabad on Friday. Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar chaired the meeting at the Minister Quarters to discuss long-pending demands raised by RTC employees.
The Minister reviewed issues related to integration of the corporation, trade union elections, and other employee concerns during the meeting. Union representatives participated in the discussions as the government moved to implement assurances given to RTC workers.
Last month, the RTC Joint Action Committee organised a bandh seeking integration of the corporation with the government and resolution of workers’ demands. The protest increased pressure on the government to take a decision on the matter.
CM meeting pushes transport corporation talks forward
On May 1, RTC union leaders met Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to discuss the future of the corporation. During the meeting, the Chief Minister asked the unions to choose between trade union elections and the RTC merger proposal.
Union leaders informed the Chief Minister that they preferred integration with the government and were willing to withdraw the demand for union elections. Revanth Reddy then directed the unions to formally communicate their decision to the government.
The Chief Minister also assured the leaders that the government would implement the decision taken collectively by the unions. He stated that the process would move ahead after the matter reached the notice of the Transport Minister.
Against this backdrop, the latest meeting between Ponnam Prabhakar and RTC union leaders gained importance. The discussions are expected to shape the government’s next steps on the transport corporation issue.
