New Delhi: The Centre expanded the Terrorist designation list by adding 23 more individuals under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The Ministry of Home Affairs said the move strengthens India’s zero-tolerance policy against terrorism.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the government would continue dismantling terror networks across the country. He added that protecting India’s security remains the government’s highest priority.
According to the Ministry, the newly listed individuals allegedly carried out anti-India activities. They also allegedly planned terror attacks, recruited operatives, smuggled arms, raised funds and supported cross-border infiltration.
Of the 23 individuals, 17 are Pakistani nationals and six are Indian nationals. However, the Ministry said all of them currently operate from Pakistan or Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Terrorist designation strengthens anti-terror action
Furthermore, the Ministry said the latest action will disrupt terror financing networks. It will also restrict the movement of suspects and weaken recruitment activities. As a result, security agencies can pursue stronger legal and investigative action.
The Ministry added that the 2019 amendment to the UAPA allows the government to designate individuals as terrorists. Consequently, the total number of listed terrorists under Section 35 of the Act has now reached 57.
Meanwhile, the Ministry included all 23 names in the Fourth Schedule of the UAPA. It said the decision would strengthen counter-terrorism efforts. Moreover, it would reinforce deterrence against activities that threaten India’s national security.
Pursuing Modi Ji’s vision of zero tolerance against terror, the MHA today declared 23 dreaded terror functionaries as terrorists under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
