Vande Bharat extension to Jammu to boost Kashmir rail connectivity

Jammu: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will flag off the Vande Bharat extension from Srinagar to Jammu Tawi on April 30, expanding high-speed rail connectivity across Jammu and Kashmir.

The train earlier operated between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. However, the extension will now connect Jammu Tawi directly, which is the region’s largest railway hub. Officials said the move will eliminate the need for passengers to change trains at Katra.

Moreover, the Railways increased the train’s capacity from eight to 20 coaches. This decision followed consistently high demand and full occupancy since its launch in June 2025. As a result, the expanded service will reduce waiting lists and improve seat availability.

Regular services under the Vande Bharat extension will begin from May 2. Two pairs of trains will operate six days a week, offering both morning and afternoon travel options.

Vande Bharat extension enhances travel and trade

The Vande Bharat extension will significantly benefit pilgrims, tourists and local commuters. Devotees travelling to Vaishno Devi can now complete their journey without interruption. In addition, those visiting Kashmir will gain direct rail access from Jammu.

Tourism is also expected to receive a boost. Travellers can now experience seamless journeys across scenic Himalayan terrain without relying on road transport. Therefore, the extension improves convenience and safety.

Local commuters will also benefit from the change. Students, officials and patients travelling between Jammu and Srinagar can avoid multiple transfers. Furthermore, the train will serve as a reliable option during winter, when highways often close due to snowfall.

Traders and artisans in the region are likely to gain from faster connectivity. Improved rail access will reduce travel time and logistical costs for goods movement. As a result, businesses can expand their reach to national markets.

During the visit, the Minister will inspect the Anji and Chenab railway bridges. These key structures form part of the USBRL corridor and support the expanded service.

Officials said the Vande Bharat extension marks a major step in strengthening rail infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. It is expected to improve mobility, support economic activity and enhance regional integration.
