Fuel supply readiness remains strong despite West Asia tensions

New Delhi: Fuel supply readiness remains strong despite the evolving situation in West Asia, with the Centre confirming adequate stocks of petrol, diesel, LPG and fertilisers across the country.

During a media briefing in New Delhi on Sunday, officials from the Ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and Chemicals and Fertilizers reviewed contingency measures. They said the government had taken steps to ensure uninterrupted supplies and smooth logistics operations.

Officials stated that the Kharif 2026 fertiliser requirement stands at 383.9 lakh metric tonnes. At present, the country holds 197.56 lakh metric tonnes in stock, accounting for more than half of the seasonal requirement.

Farmers have already purchased 86.65 lakh metric tonnes of chemical fertilisers during the current Kharif season. Meanwhile, demand for organic manure has risen sharply compared with the corresponding period last year.

Since the crisis began, domestic production and imports have added about 147.40 lakh metric tonnes of fertilisers. Authorities also expect more than 25 lakh metric tonnes of imported fertilisers to arrive at Indian ports during June.

Fuel supply readiness backed by adequate stocks

Officials urged citizens to avoid panic buying of petrol, diesel and LPG. Instead, they advised people to follow official updates and use energy responsibly.

The government said oil companies continue to meet demand from LPG consumers, PNG households and CNG transport networks. Over the past four days, companies supplied about 1.77 crore LPG cylinders against bookings of nearly 1.67 crore cylinders.

At the same time, enforcement agencies stepped up action against hoarding and black marketing. During the last four days, authorities carried out more than 1,800 raids and inspected thousands of fuel outlets and LPG distributors.

Officials also highlighted progress in city gas expansion. Since March 2026, agencies have activated about 9.16 lakh PNG connections and created infrastructure for another 3.05 lakh households.

Furthermore, the government promoted the rollout of E85 fuel, which costs nearly ₹20 per litre less than conventional petrol. Officials said the fuel can support cleaner transport and lower emissions.

On maritime operations, authorities confirmed that all 24 Indian crew members aboard MT MARIVEX remained safe after a fire incident off the coast of Oman. The Directorate General of Shipping, the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Navy are coordinating support efforts.

Officials added that Indian ports continue to function normally without congestion. They reiterated that adequate stocks of fuel and fertilisers remain available throughout the country.
