Congress wins majority in first phase of panchayat elections

Hyderabad: Panchayat election results from the first phase showed Congress-backed candidates winning a clear majority, securing 2,425 gram panchayat seats, including unanimous wins, across Telangana.

Out of a total of 4,230 gram panchayats where polling took place, the Congress accounted for 57.32 percent of the seats. Candidates backed by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) won 1,168 seats, which formed 27.6 percent of the total. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 189 seats, amounting to 4.5 percent.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) won 24 seats, while the Communist Party of India secured 23 seats. Independents made a strong showing by winning 401 seats, or 9.47 percent. The State Election Commission released the final results after completing the vote count in all 4,230 villages.

According to a report released by the Congress, its supporters won 60.69 percent of the seats when unanimous selections were included. Based on this calculation, the party claimed control of 2,567 panchayats.

Panchayat election results highlight district-wise performance

The Congress dominated all districts except Siddipet, where the BRS secured a narrow edge. The Congress recorded its highest tally in Nalgonda district by winning 211 sarpanch posts. It also crossed the 100-seat mark in Vikarabad with 179 seats, followed by Khammam with 137, Nizamabad with 134, and Medak with 111.

Compared to the BRS, the Congress gained an additional 119 seats in Nizamabad, 112 in Nalgonda, 108 in Vikarabad, 99 in Khammam, and 78 in Jogulamba Gadwal district.

The BRS performed strongly in Siddipet district by winning 71 seats, five more than the Congress. The party also put up a fight in Mahabubnagar, Jagtial, Komaram Bheem, Wanaparthy, Hanumakonda, Rangareddy, and Sangareddy districts. However, it registered its weakest performance in Jogulamba Gadwal, where it won only eight seats. The party secured just 10 seats each in Mulugu and Narayanpet, and 15 in Nizamabad.

The BJP failed to open its account in Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mulugu, Medak, and Peddapalli districts. It won one seat each in Jangaon and Warangal, and only two seats in Mahabubnagar district, despite having an MP from the area. The party recorded its best performance in Kamareddy with 23 seats, followed by Nirmal with 18, Nizamabad with 16, Karimnagar with 13, and Siddipet with 11.

The CPM won the highest number of its seats in Khammam with 10, followed by Bhadradri Kothagudem with nine. It also won two seats in Nalgonda and one seat each in Mahabubnagar, Suryapet, and Yadadri. The CPI performed best in Bhadradri Kothagudem with eight seats, followed by Khammam with five, Nalgonda with four, and Yadadri with two. It also won one seat each in Nagarkurnool, Hanumakonda, Vikarabad, and Sangareddy.

Independents recorded their highest tally in Adilabad district with 31 wins. They won 19 seats in Nizamabad, 16 in Karimnagar, and 15 each in Komaram Bheem and Siddipet. Kamareddy, Nalgonda, and Nirmal saw 14 independent winners each. Bhadradri Kothagudem recorded 13, while Sangareddy and Vikarabad had 10 each. In Wanaparthy district, major political parties won all seats.
