India records highest-ever renewable energy expansion in 2025

New Delhi: India recorded its highest-ever renewable energy expansion in 2025, adding 44.51 GW of renewable capacity till November, nearly doubling the 24.72 GW added during the same period last year, official data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy showed.

This record renewable energy expansion pushed the country’s total renewable installed capacity to 253.96 GW as of November 2025. The figure marked a year-on-year growth of over 23% from 205.52 GW in November 2024. When large hydro and nuclear power were included, India’s total non-fossil fuel capacity rose to 262.74 GW.

As a result, non-fossil sources accounted for 51.5% of India’s total installed electricity capacity of 509.64 GW. India achieved the 50% non-fossil milestone in June 2025, five years ahead of its Nationally Determined Contribution target under the Paris Agreement.

The government said the expansion aligned with the Prime Minister’s commitments announced at COP-26 to reach 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030. India crossed the 250 GW non-fossil capacity milestone in August 2025, reflecting accelerated project execution during the year.

Solar energy remained the backbone of the renewable energy expansion. India added 34.98 GW of solar capacity during 2025, compared to 20.85 GW added in the same period last year. Solar installed capacity crossed 100 GW in January 2025 and reached 132.85 GW by November.

This represented a year-on-year increase of over 41% from 94.17 GW in November 2024. The Ministry attributed the growth to large-scale solar parks, central public sector undertakings, and rooftop installations under flagship schemes.

Wind energy also posted a strong performance. India added 5.82 GW of wind capacity during 2025, up from 3.2 GW in the previous year’s comparable period. Wind installed capacity crossed 50 GW in March 2025 and stood at 53.99 GW in November.

The growth translated into a 12.5% annual increase over the 47.96 GW recorded in November 2024. Policy reforms and revised manufacturing guidelines supported the higher capacity additions during the year.

Renewable energy expansion strengthens non-fossil power dominance

The renewable energy expansion also reflected in electricity generation trends. On 29 July 2025, renewable sources met 51.5% of India’s total electricity demand of 203 GW, marking the highest-ever daily renewable share in power generation.

As per IRENA Renewable Energy Statistics 2025, India ranked third globally in installed solar capacity. It ranked fourth in wind power capacity and fourth in total renewable energy capacity worldwide.

Data showed a strong project pipeline supporting future growth. As of November 30, 2025, solar projects totalling 69.12 GW were under implementation, while another 35.46 GW had been tendered. Wind projects in the pipeline accounted for nearly 32 GW.

Hybrid, round-the-clock and firm dispatchable renewable energy projects accounted for more than 70 GW under various stages of development. Large hydro capacity stood at 50.35 GW, with 25.33 GW under construction.

Nuclear power capacity remained at 8.78 GW, with projects totalling 13.6 GW under implementation and tendered. Together, renewable, large hydro and nuclear projects formed a non-fossil pipeline exceeding 509 GW.

In the overall power mix, thermal power accounted for 48.45% of installed capacity. Renewables, including large hydro, accounted for 49.83%. Non-fossil sources together held a majority share at 51.55%.

The Ministry said the record renewable energy expansion was driven by faster project clearances, expanded domestic manufacturing under the PLI scheme, and demand-side programmes such as PM-Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM.
