Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police Commissioner C. V. Sajjanar on Sunday announced strict enforcement of the Chinese Manja ban and warned that police would register criminal cases against violators without any leniency.
Ahead of the Sankranti festival season, the Commissioner said Chinese Manja stood completely banned under the Environment Protection Act, 1986. He cautioned that the sharp synthetic thread posed a serious threat to public safety and the environment.
Sajjanar said Chinese Manja had caused fatal neck injuries to two-wheeler riders in the past. In addition, he noted that children had suffered serious finger injuries while flying kites. He also pointed out that the material had led to the death of birds and wildlife across the city.
The Police Commissioner explained that Chinese Manja was non-biodegradable and remained in the environment for several years. As a result, it caused long-term ecological damage. He further warned that contact with electric power lines could lead to electrocution, fires, and loss of life.
Accordingly, Sajjanar said the Hyderabad Police would launch special enforcement drives and conduct surprise inspections across the city. He made it clear that police would book sellers, stockists, transporters, and users of Chinese Manja under relevant legal provisions.
Chinese Manja ban to be strictly enforced during Sankranti
Appealing to parents and guardians, the Commissioner urged them to allow children to fly kites only with traditional cotton thread. Moreover, he advised citizens to strictly avoid hazardous materials during festival celebrations.
“Chinese Manja is a lethal material, not a festive toy,” Sajjanar said, warning that anyone found violating the ban would face strict criminal action. He added that festivals should bring joy without endangering human lives or harming nature.
The Commissioner also urged the public to report any illegal sale, storage, or use of Chinese Manja. Citizens can dial 100, contact the Hyderabad Police WhatsApp helpline at 94906 16555, or approach the nearest police station. Police officials assured that they would keep the identity of informants confidential.
Sajjanar said the Hyderabad Police remained committed to ensuring safe and responsible celebrations across the city during the festive season.
