Congress steps up municipal poll strategy with TPCC meeting

Hyderabad: The Congress intensified its preparations for the upcoming Telangana municipal elections as the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee convened an extended executive meeting in Hyderabad on Thursday to finalise its poll strategy.

TPCC chief and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud chaired the meeting at Gandhi Bhavan. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Congress in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan, and AICC secretaries also attended. Leaders focused on formulating strategies to secure victory in municipal corporations and municipalities across the state.

The meeting followed recent discussions between Revanth Reddy and Mahesh Kumar Goud on municipal polls. Party leaders reviewed the outcome of recent panchayat elections, where Congress won a significant number of sarpanch posts. However, leaders noted that the opposition BRS also performed better than expected, prompting the ruling party to remain alert.

The Congress decided to avoid giving scope to rival parties in municipal elections. Leaders said the party aimed for a clean sweep across municipalities. As part of this plan, the party will prepare a list of six potential candidates from each ward or division and conduct surveys to identify the most suitable contenders.

Party sources said the meeting could also discuss the Centre’s decision to rename the employment guarantee scheme. Leaders are expected to chalk out a response on the issue as part of the broader political strategy.

Congress municipal strategy to counter opposition narratives

Congress leaders said the party would adopt a clear action plan to counter opposition criticism on Krishna and Godavari river water issues. They said the government would take the Assembly’s PowerPoint presentations on these issues to the public in a stronger manner.

In addition, the meeting may deliberate on the reconstitution of District Congress Committees. Party leaders indicated that the appointment of mandal presidents would take place on January 15.

Leaders said the discussions reflected the Congress’s focus on organisational strengthening and coordinated messaging ahead of the municipal elections.
