Delhi: United States President Donald Trump shifted his stance within 12 hours on Friday regarding remarks he made about India. During an evening White House press conference around 6–7 pm, he stated that he would “always remain a friend of Modi” and expressed readiness to “reset relations with India.”
Earlier that morning, around 6 am, Trump had posted on his social media platform Truth that “it looks like we have lost India and Russia to China” and wished them well for the future.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to Trump’s later comments on Saturday at 9:45 am through X, saying he deeply appreciated and fully reciprocated Trump’s sentiments. Modi underlined that India and the US share “a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”

Trump’s mixed tone draws focus on India US partnership
In his press briefing, Trump described trade talks with India and other countries as positive but expressed displeasure at the European Union’s \$3.5 billion fine against Google. He also voiced frustration over India’s purchase of Russian oil, adding that the US imposed a 50% tariff on India as a result.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said Modi values India’s partnership with the United States. He added that Modi has always shared good personal relations with Trump. On further questions, Jaishankar declined to elaborate, stating only that India remains closely linked with the United States.
