BJP targets 60% win in Telangana municipal elections: Ramchander Rao

Hyderabad: BJP State President N. Ramchander Rao said on Wednesday that the party was entering the Telangana municipal elections with a clear target of securing a 60 per cent victory across municipalities.

Reacting to the release of the election schedule, Ramchander Rao told reporters that the BJP aimed to win at least 70 municipalities. Moreover, he said the party was confident of securing control of a minimum of five municipal corporations.

He said the upcoming polls would allow the BJP to demonstrate its organisational strength. At the same time, he added that the elections would help the party expand its footprint in urban areas across Telangana.

On Tuesday evening, the State Election Commission released the municipal election schedule. The notification covered 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations in the state.

According to the schedule, officials will begin accepting nominations from Wednesday. Thereafter, polling will take place in a single phase on February 11. Subsequently, the commission will declare the results on February 13. With the notification, the model code of conduct came into force across Telangana.

BJP outlines plans for Telangana municipal elections

Ramchander Rao said the BJP had already demonstrated its strength in recent Parliament and Gram Panchayat elections. Therefore, he said, the party was fully prepared for the municipal polls.

He added that the BJP would receive detailed reports from all regions by Tuesday evening. After that, the party would hold committee meetings and announce candidates without delay.

Meanwhile, targeting rival parties, Ramchander Rao accused the Congress and BRS of depending only on minority vote-bank politics. In addition, he alleged that the Congress and AIMIM functioned together in Telangana.

Finally, he asserted that the BJP would emerge as the principal opposition force in the state after the elections. He added that the party would firmly establish its organisational strength through the Telangana municipal elections.
