New Delhi: Oilseed production increased to 429.89 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, as cultivation area expanded across the country, the Union government informed the Lok Sabha on Monday.
Data from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare showed that the area under oilseed cultivation rose to 304.40 lakh hectares in 2024-25. This marked an increase from 301.92 lakh hectares recorded during the previous agricultural year.
At the same time, oilseed output rose sharply from 396.69 lakh tonnes in 2023-24. The increase reflected both wider acreage and policy support aimed at boosting domestic edible oil production.
The government said it continued to use price and procurement measures to stabilise farmer incomes. These steps aimed to shield cultivators from market volatility and reduce import dependence.
Oilseed production supported by NMEO-OS and MSP measures
The Centre said it approved the National Mission on Edible Oils–Oilseeds on October 3, 2024. The mission aimed to raise domestic oilseed output and advance self-reliance in edible oils under Atmanirbhar Bharat.
In addition, the government implemented minimum support prices and import tariffs for oilseeds. These measures sought to ensure fair prices for farmers and encourage higher domestic production.
Procurement under the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan also covered oilseeds. The scheme helped farmers secure better prices and income support.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ramnath Thakur provided the information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
