New Delhi: India recorded its highest-ever monthly output of phosphatic and potassic fertilizers in January 2026, with P&K fertilizer production touching a record 15.76 lakh metric tonnes, the Centre said on Thursday.
The Department of Fertilizers under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers said the surge covered key products such as di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and NPK fertilizers. Officials said the milestone reflected a decisive move towards self-reliance in fertilizer manufacturing and strengthened domestic supply for the agricultural sector.
The department attributed the record P&K fertilizer production to a series of pro-industry policy measures introduced by the government. It said structural reforms and investment-friendly initiatives expanded production capacity across both public and private sector units.
According to officials, the increase in domestic output also reduced India’s vulnerability to global supply disruptions and price volatility. They said higher local production ensured timely availability of fertilizers to farmers during critical sowing periods.
Policy reforms and subsidies drive P&K fertilizer production
The government said long-term international agreements with resource-rich countries played a key role in stabilising raw material supply. These strategic tie-ups ensured uninterrupted availability of inputs, allowing domestic plants to operate at optimal capacity.
Officials also highlighted the role of the Nutrient Based Subsidy policy in supporting manufacturers. They said timely disbursal of subsidies under the scheme provided financial stability to fertilizer companies. This helped them manage costs efficiently and plan capacity expansion.
The department said predictable subsidy payments encouraged both the expansion of existing facilities and investment in new production units. As a result, manufacturers sustained higher output levels despite global market uncertainties.
The Centre said the record P&K fertilizer production strengthened India’s food security by ensuring adequate fertilizer availability across states. It added that the achievement marked a significant step towards building an Atmanirbhar fertilizer ecosystem aligned with national agricultural priorities.
