Monsoon floods wreak havoc across Himachal, Punjab and UP

Hyderabad: Monsoon floods swept across northern India this season, killing 366 people in Himachal Pradesh and leaving behind massive destruction worth ₹4 lakh crore.

Shimla saw 116 percent more rainfall than normal, while Kullu registered 113 percent excess. The deluge unleashed landslides, worsening the damage.

Punjab’s 23 districts remain affected, though no rain alerts are forecast for the next three days. Still, the Sarsari dam in Ludhiana poses a risk of collapse.

In Uttarakhand, a sudden cloudburst in Uttarkashi’s Naugaon town sent water and debris rushing into homes and markets. Vehicles were swept away in the torrent.

In Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, the Yamuna river rose dangerously, moving a kilometer into the city. Ashrams reported five feet of water while Vrindavan’s Parikrama Marg went underwater.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit flood-hit regions on September 9 to assess relief measures.
