Indian Navy signs fuel barges contract with Shoft Shipyard

Thane: The Indian Navy signed a fuel barges contract with Shoft Shipyard Private Limited, Thane, for the construction of four 500T self propelled fuel barges on March 2, 2026.

The agreement marks a step under the Government’s Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Shoft Shipyard, an MSME unit, will build the vessels in line with the Classification Rules of the Indian Register of Shipping.

The barges will primarily replenish fuel to ships and submarines in harbour and at anchorage. Therefore, the project aims to strengthen operational logistics support for naval assets.

Officials stated that the contract will also promote domestic shipbuilding capability. Moreover, it is expected to support the growth of MSME shipyards in the country.

Fuel barges contract to boost MSME shipbuilding

With this fuel barges contract, the Indian Navy reiterated its focus on encouraging indigenous manufacturing. The project aligns with Maritime India Vision 2030, which seeks to expand India’s maritime infrastructure and shipbuilding ecosystem.

The Navy said the initiative would contribute to strengthening the domestic defence manufacturing base. In addition, it reinforces efforts to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers for auxiliary naval platforms.

The construction of these barges is expected to add momentum to the local maritime industry. Authorities said such contracts will create sustained opportunities for MSME shipyards in the defence sector.
