MoD signs Rs 858 crore defence contracts for Tunguska and P8I

New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence signed defence contracts worth Rs 858 crore for missile systems and aircraft maintenance, officials said on March 27.

The agreements were finalised at Kartavya Bhawan-2 in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and senior officials. Authorities stated that the contracts cover the procurement of Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems and depot-level inspection of P8I aircraft.

The ministry signed a Rs 445 crore deal with JSC Rosoboronexport, Russia, for Tunguska systems for the Indian Army. Officials said these missiles will strengthen India’s air defence against aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. They added that the deal reinforces the strategic defence partnership between India and Russia.

In addition, the Ministry of Defence awarded a Rs 413 crore contract to Boeing India Defense Private Ltd for the inspection of P8I Long-Range Maritime Reconnaissance Aircraft used by the Indian Navy.

Defence contracts boost missile strength and aircraft upkeep

Officials said the defence contracts will ensure depot-level maintenance of the P8I fleet within India. The work will be carried out at a domestic Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul facility.

Moreover, the contract falls under the Buy Indian category with 100% indigenous content. Authorities noted that this step supports the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.

They added that regular inspection will improve operational readiness and extend the service life of the aircraft. At the same time, the Tunguska systems will add another layer to India’s multi-tier air defence network.

Officials emphasised that these defence contracts aim to enhance combat preparedness while promoting domestic capability in maintenance and support services.
